Is it relevant in the 21st century to stage a 50-year-old piece played in a style that contemporary audiences are not familiar with about a war that began a hundred years ago?

When Joan Littlewood first presented this play the escalation of the Vietnam War was half a year away. ‘The War to End all Wars’ did nothing of the kind. Today, there is trouble in the Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa not to mention the decade of war in former Yugoslavia in the 1990’s. Arguably, all these conflicts are traceable back to lines drawn on maps at the end of WWI.

‘Music Hall’ is a form of entertainment containing elements of the absurd. How better to comment on a reality that was too strange to comprehend? The story is told through songs and documents of the time. Critical of the conduct of the war, as well as geopolitical and eco­nomic pursuits leading to the unconscionable loss of lives, it honours the sacrifices of the victims. It exposes the differences in perception of the war between civilians at home and soldiers on the front lines and how the media helped create this disparity of opinion. Relevant? You bet!

Winner of the Grand Prix, Theatre de Nations festival, Paris, 1963, ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ has become a modern theatre classic. The New World Theatre Club has staged quality English dramatic pro­ductions in Luxembourg for over 40 years and is proud to bring this moving play to local audiences.

Der Erste Weltkrieg begann am 2. August mit der Besatzung Luxemburgs durch deutsche Truppen. Luxemburg war als neut­raler Staat nicht unmittelbar am Kriegsgeschehen beteiligt und blieb auch von den gewaltigen menschlichen und materiellen Verlusten, die seine belgischen, französischen und deutschen Nachbarn erlitten, weitgehend verschont. Dennoch erlebte es den Ersten Weltkrieg als eine Zeit nie dagewesener Krisen in allen Bereichen des öffentlichen, häufig auch des privaten Lebens. So überrascht es kaum, dass ein umfangreicher Bestand von fiktio­naler und dokumentarischer Literatur die vielfältigen Ereignisse, Impressionen und Stimmungen der Kriegsjahre zu beschreiben und zu deuten versucht. Die Ausstellung liefert anhand von zeitgenössischen literarischen und historischen Dokumenten wie Tagebüchern, Briefen, Chro­niken, Bildmaterial und Objekten Einblicke in das geschichtliche Geschehen des Ersten Weltkrieges und seine literarische Reprä­sentation: Wie erlebten die Luxemburger die Besetzung ihres Lan­des und das grauenvolle Kriegsgeschehen vor ihrer Haustür, wie reagierten sie auf Flüchtlingszüge, Lazarette, Verhaftungen, Bom­bardierungen, Hunger und Wucher? Und welche politischen, sozi­alen und kulturellen Folgen hatte die „Urkatastrophe des 20. Jahr­hunderts“ für das Land? Hundert Jahre nach Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges ist sein Erbe immer noch Teil unserer Gegenwart.
